RE: people’s attitude towards Calculus.
I see Calculus everywhere.
So I’m taking this history film class and we are discussing media theory and politics, which, when discussing media theory basically goes, Marxist theory of media which is: people on top use media to frame debate and inform you of the best choices (paraphrase) and then some dude (Althasser) came after who was like, na, it isn’t all top down because other people and groups take those messages and filter them and pass them down called ISA’s (ideological state apparatuses) but then some other dude was like, that’s bs because people each internalize every message themselves and have different effects on everyone else as well.
So why I say I saw calculus everywhere is you can say you have a curve and you are trying to find the volume of the curve and you can use the biggest square possible that fits the curve (Marxist theory)- but that isn’t very accurate, so you can use several unit squares, which is more accurate, or you can use an infinite number of squares (which is a limit and a fundamental feature of calculus) to actually find the volume of the curve.

First off, props to you, Jasen, because I actually believe you understand those words you just said (I sure as hell didn’t, but I didn’t graduate college).
However, I’m not sure “discussion of Marxist media theory in a film history class” counts as a real world application.
