Here’s another unpopular opinon.

I spent about twelve hours on Thursday and Friday nights watching Friends. It’s a really funny show.

There’s something wrong with us if this in unpopular opinion. Friends is the funniest show (not best). Seinfeld was funny, but cold and heartless, supposedly a strength but actually made it less funny for me.

I COULD GO ON, SIRS AND LADIES!

really?  this is an unpopular opinion?  we own the entire series on dvd and have watched at least 1 episode per night basically since we got married.  that’s 5+ years and each viewing is still as funny as the last.  who doesn’t like friends?

The notion that Friends is a bad show is borne out of the fact that it came of age along with a generation that felt that popular=”selling out” and that you had to be subversive to be “good”.  Friends was starting just as grunge was being co-opted.  I don’t see this as being entirely a coincidence.  As with Stone Temple Pilots, the magnitude of the criticisms leveled against Friends were unfair and tainted with cooler-than-thou arrogance.  Almost 20 years later, it’s easy to see why Friends was so popular- it was funny, the characters were relatable, and it’s ENDLESSLY re-watchable (ask the cast members about their residual checks, they’ll tell you).  Is it Mr. Show?  Of course not, but that’s not what it was menat to be.  I would say “Name me 5 network sitcoms that were entertaining for even close to as long as Friends was”, but I’m not even remotely interested in that tiresome debate.
